Alternative Sources of Fuel

Once upon a time, you had very limited choices when it came to fueling your vehicles: gasoline, or diesel. Now with all the worry over climate change, decreasing of fossil fuel sources and general concerns about the environment, many are working overtime on viable alternative fuel sources. Right now there are many alternative fuel sources available.

One of these fuel sources is bio-diesel. Bio-diesel can be produced from many sources, including vegetable oil and animal fats. Soybean oil, and restaurant grease are just a few of the more popular sources because it is cheap, and widely available. Just over 7 pounds of soybean oil will produce a gallon of bio-diesel fuel. The price of soybean oil is about .20, so a gallon of diesel would be only $1.50. If you are using the cold press method to extract the oil, the by-product of this is a solid soybean cake, which is able to be sold to farmers to feed their livestock, cutting costs for making bio-diesel from soybean oil down to virtually zero. It takes little effort and knowhow to produce your own bio-diesel. Also, there are no necessary conversions to your diesel vehicle. Merely fuel up and go.

Ethanol is another fuel alternative that is made from corn or other vegetable crops, and it makes fewer emissions and greenhouse gases. Natural gas and propane are also widely used, because not only are both found in abundance in fuel cell air compressor the United States, but they burn better and cleaner, producing fewer emissions than regular fuel sources. Water cars (hydrogen fuel cells) are not quite ready for mass production, but water and gasoline automobiles are here. Cars that run off of hydrogen fuel cells give off no harmful pollutants, just water. since natural gas and liquid propane burn hotter, you may need to adjust your motor.

There are other alternatives like electric hybrid cars. These automobiles have 2 motors, a small fuel engine, and an electric motor. The 2 are perfectly synchronized, with the electric motor operating the car in small applications, like just driving around town. When you need more speed or torque, the internal combustion engine kicks in and provides the additional push you need. While the combustion motor is working, it also creates enough electrical power to recharge the electrical system. These are in wide use now.

If water, electricity, and food can currently power our vehicles, why not air? This idea is being developed near Nice, in France. There is a special motor that has hot combustion processes. A large compressed air cylinder, mounted under the car, powers the motor with air pressure. When the air is released it makes the pistons turn, putting the automobile into motion. When the tank empties, the car switches to an electric motor. When the electric motor is being used, it also operates a compressor to refill the air tank. Now you won’t be able to use these vehicles for long trips or going up hills, but they are impeccable for just getting around town.
