Things Your Competitors Know About Medical Hypnosis

An upcoming study pointed out the things that professionals in the field of hypnotherapy have learned. Hypnosis is a method to alleviate pain for women and anxiety when she undergoes a breast biopsy. As a Nurse Anesthetist Hypnosetherapeut Jens Hübinger I was able to observe the impact of anxiety on anesthesia.

The Dr. Elvira V. Lang who is the associate professor in radiology of Harvard Medical School, worked on a research study on how to use hypnosis to treat breast biopsies. Her research findings are quoted as saying “The findings show that non-pharmacologic means can be very powerful — without side effects,”

There were 236 patients at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center that were randomly assigned three different kinds of treatment when they underwent a the large core needle biopsy in outpatients. The treatment was divided as follows: Sixty-six of the patients received standard care, while 82 were treated with what is known as organized “empathetic attention” (a person who was assigned to a specific woman in order to be responsive to women’s demands) and 78 received self-hypnotic relaxation instruction by a specially qualified researchers assistant (not necessarily certified hypnotist).

This is how the hypnosis-training of the women was instructed the following way: they were instructed to open their eyes up and then close their eyes. They were instructed to take deep breaths, concentrate on the sensation of floating and then imagine the perfect setting. (We refer to this as “safe place hypnosis” in the world of hypnosis.) It is expected that prior to the beginning of the biopsies all women had increased anxiety levels. The biopsies conducted in the normal care group, those who had the procedure had the highest levels of anxiety but the anxiety was not affected for the group with empathy and perhaps most important there was a notable reduction in anxiety in the group that was hypnotized.

Though the three groups all reported pain during the procedure it is worth noting that the women who were who were in the hypnosis and empathy groups experienced less pain than the usual care group. Important is the study also discovered that the hypnosis group has the fastest procedure times and also the least expensive cost. This could be an important aspect to highlight to doctors and hospital administrators in promoting the benefits of the hypnosis method.

The result of this research was that the previous assumptions about mind-body exercises were questioned and the most important thing was that it allowed medical professionals to see that self-hypnosis is a simple skill to learn at the table during the procedure without expense. This dispels the notion that long appointments or preparation is essential to begin using the hypnosis technique in the area prior to surgery.

I have used self-hypnosis in the course of a recent breast surgery I can assure you that it really helps reduce the anxiety levels prior to surgery. I also utilized self-hypnosis throughout the actual procedure, which was carried out using local anesthesia. Prior to this, I had used self-hypnosis to repair the umbilical and ventral hernia with local anesthesia. The doctor was amazed at the level of silence I maintained. He would stop at intervals to inquire whether I was fine. It was my “Safe Place” which, is a popular hypnotic technique that is used.
